Good places to get current info
(excerpted from Chapter 3, Discover Balboa Park,  2nd Edition, © Ridgway Park Publishing)

A good place to start is by picking up a local newspaper on a Thursday. U-T San Diego’s “Night & Day” pullout section on Thursdays usually has a section on Balboa Park, including current offerings at the museums and theaters. The San Diego Reader, a freebie, which also comes out on Thursdays has a good listing of current events and activities that include Balboa Park museums and theaters. Both of these are readily available throughout the county. In the Park, there is a Union-Tribune newspaper dispenser at the eastern edge of the Plaza de Panama next to a post office box. The Reader may be picked up at the Japanese Friendship Garden’s Tea Pavilion.

It’s important to have a current listing of activities since the exhibitions, plays and concerts change frequently. Without even leaving home or your office you can also access the following website on the Park. Since this site is maintained by the Balboa Park Conservancy staff: Since the staff also publishes the Balboa Park Events Guide, a handy brochure that is updated every other month, their information is the most reliable. You will also find links on this site to most of the cultural organizations in the Park.

Note: Use of a good search engine will bring up several other websites on Balboa Park, but their information is not as complete as the sites listed above, nor are they kept current.

You can also call the Balboa Park Visitors Center for specific information, (619) 239-0512. The center’s phones are staffed by knowledgeable volunteers, many of whom have “worked” in the Park for years. The Visitors Center is located in the House of Hospitality on the Plaza de Panama (the central plaza in the Park), and is open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily, with extended hours in the summer.
